God Knows Best

Once again, I want to present a precious poem in place of the pastoral letter.

This poem is called "God Knows Best" written by Helen Steiner Rice.

The author lost her husband early in her marriage and experienced long period of suffering.

It was during those years that she wrote the poem finding solace from the Lord.

Our Father knows what's best for us,

so why should we complain?

We always want the sunshine

but He knows there must be rain.

We love the sound of laughter

and the merriment of cheer,

But our hearts would lose their tenderness

if we never shed a tear.

Our Father tests us often

with suffering and with sorrow.

He tests us not to punish us

but to help us meet tomorrow,

For growing trees are strengthened

when they withstand the storm,

And the sharp cut of a chisel

gives the marble grace and form.

God never hurts us needlessly

and He never wastes our pain,

For every loss He sends to us

is followed by rich gain,

And when we count the blessings

that God has so freely sent,

We will find no cause for murmuring

and no time to lament.

For our Father loves His children

and to Him all things are plain,

He never sends us pleasure

when the soul's deep need is pain.

So whenever we are troubled and

when everything goes wrong,

It is just God working in us

to make our spirits strong.

Whenever I face tumultuous storms in my life, I reflect on this poem.

In it, I am able to find God's comfort.

At each reading, I find the necessary strength and solace that sustains me through passages of trials.

To those who are suffering through hardships in life, I share this poem as a present.

가장 잘 아시는 하나님

이번 주에도 제가 아끼는 시를 통해 목회서신을 대신 했으면 합니다.

제가 소개하고 싶은 시는 헬렌 스타이나 라이스의 《가장 잘 아시는 하나님》이라는 시입니다.

시인은 일찍 남편을 하나님께 보낸 후에 고통스런 시간을 보냈습니다.

시인은 고난 중에 위로하시는 하나님의 사랑을 시로 쓰기 시작했습니다.

우리에게 무엇이 가장 좋은지 아버지 아시니

불평할게 무어랴.

우린 언제나 햇살을 그리나

비가 내려야 함을 하나님은 아시느니...

우린 웃음소리

기쁜 환락을 사랑하나

만일 한 방울 눈물도 모른다면

가슴 속 부드러움은 사라지리라...

때로는 괴롬과 슬픔으로

우리를 시험하시는 아버지

그 시험은 벌이 아니라

내일을 맞이하라고 우릴 도우심이어라...

거센 폭풍을 이겨야

자라나는 나무들은 힘을 얻고

끌로 날카로이 도려내야

대리석이 아름다움과 형상을 얻듯이...

하나님은 부질없이 우릴 헤치지 않으시며

우리 아픔 저버리지 않으시리니

무엇을 잃게 하시면

다시금 가득히 얻게 하신다오...

그리도 아낌없이 보내신

축복을 헤아려본다면

불평할 까닭도

슬퍼할 시간도 없으리라...

우리 아버지는 자녀를 사랑하시어

아버지께는 모든 것이 한결 같기에

영혼에 아픔이 꼭 필요할 때

기쁨을 보내시는 일은 없느니...

고뇌가 닥쳐오고

만사가 괴로울 때,

그건 우리 가운데 하나님 일하시어

우리 영혼 견고케 하시는 때라오.

저는 인생의 거센 폭풍이 찾아오고 힘든 일이 겹치면 이 시를 생각합니다.

이 시를 통해 하나님의 위로를 받습니다.

시련을 통과한 시인만이 줄 수 있는 위로이기에 이 시를 읽을 때마다 힘을 얻습니다.

여러 가지 시련으로 힘들어하는 성도님들께 제가 아끼는 이 시를 선물로 드립니다.
